Simmons leads mayoral fundraising while Brook holds larger campaign balance in Coral Springs

Coral Springs, Florida – Commissioner Joshua Simmons holds a narrow fundraising lead over Mayor Scott Brook in the Coral Springs mayoral race, but Brook has considerably more money available for the final weeks of campaigning.

Campaign finance reports due October 9 show Simmons has raised $46,530 and spent $41,505, leaving $5,025. Brook has collected $43,667 and spent $14,007, giving him a remaining balance of $29,660 ahead of the November 3 election.

The figures illustrate the difference between total fundraising and money still available to spend. Although Simmons has brought in more overall, Brook’s remaining funds are nearly six times those of his challenger.

Simmons’ largest expense highlighted in the reports was an $18,901 payment to Plantation-based MDW Communications on September 22 for campaign marketing. He raised $16,775 between July 1 and October 2. Currently a city commissioner, Simmons cannot seek another term in Seat 4 because of term limits.

Brook collected $20,737 from July through September, nearly twice his spring fundraising total. His summer contributors included developers, real estate businesses, and two political committees. Both committees, including the Realtors Political Advocacy Committee, contributed $1,000 each.

In the five-candidate Seat 3 contest, Coral Springs police Sgt. Bill Capplis has the largest campaign fund. He raised $5,765 during the summer, bringing his overall total to $29,930. With approximately $22,700 remaining, he has more available than his four opponents combined.

The seat was held by Vice Mayor Nancy Metayer, who was killed April 1. Her husband, Stephen Bowen, has been charged with premeditated murder in her death.

Kohy Holmes added $841 for a cumulative total of $5,718. Erick Nyatenya reported no contributions or expenditures between July 1 and October 2.

The largest fundraising total among all candidates on the ballot belongs to Jeffrey Adelman, who is running for Simmons’ Seat 4. Adelman has raised $76,400 and has approximately $40,300 available.

Fellow Seat 4 candidate Jennifer Levi has raised $28,342, including a $750 loan, and has about $9,000 remaining. Tristan Celestin has raised $2,135.

Commissioner Shawn Cerra was reelected to Seat 2 without opposition. Early voting begins October 19, followed by Election Day on November 3.
