Coral Springs police to host free Shred-A-Thon for residents looking to safely dispose of sensitive documents

Coral Springs, Florida – Coral Springs residents will have a free opportunity to safely get rid of old and sensitive paperwork next month when the Coral Springs Police Department hosts its next Shred-A-Thon.

The touchless event is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 19, from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Sportsplex, located at 2575 Sportsplex Drive. The event is being organized by the Coral Springs Police Department in partnership with Shred Monkeys.

The program is intended to give residents a convenient way to dispose of documents that may contain personal or sensitive information. Instead of placing those papers in regular trash or recycling, residents can bring them to the event for secure shredding.

Participation is limited to Coral Springs residents. When arriving at the Sportsplex, residents will need to place their driver’s license on the front dashboard of their vehicle so organizers can confirm eligibility.

There are also specific limits on how much material each vehicle can bring. Residents may bring up to three file-size cardboard boxes or reusable bins filled with documents. Those who have more paperwork can bring up to three additional boxes by making a $5 donation for each extra box.

Money collected from the additional boxes will benefit the Police Explorer Program, allowing residents to support the youth program while getting rid of unwanted documents.

Organizers are asking participants to make sure their boxes and bins meet the size requirements before arriving. Containers cannot be larger than 15 by 12 by 10 inches and should be placed in the trunk or another location that is easy for workers to reach.

Plastic bags and garbage bags will not be accepted at the event. Residents should also prepare their paperwork before arriving by removing trash, binders, clamps and plastic or metal rings from the documents.

The event will operate on a first-come, first-served basis. That means residents who want to take part should plan to arrive during the scheduled hours, as there is no guarantee that shredding will remain available throughout the entire two-hour period.

Police also warn that the event could end early if the maximum capacity is reached. Residents with large amounts of paperwork may therefore want to arrive early rather than wait until the final part of the event.

Weather could also affect the schedule. If there is inclement weather, the Shred-A-Thon will be canceled and rescheduled, according to event information provided by the city.

The partnership between the police department and Shred Monkeys also provides a controlled setting for the disposal of paperwork.
