Coral Springs pediatrician Dr. Jennifer Liang remembered for decades of care and compassion

Coral Springs, Florida – Dr. Jennifer Liang, a longtime Coral Springs resident whose work as a pediatrician connected her with generations of local families, died September 23 at age 74. She practiced at Coral Square Pediatrics and was part of the Coral Springs community for more than 30 years.

Her family remembers her for the kindness and warmth she brought to both medicine and her personal relationships. Over the years, her role as a physician became closely connected with her life as a neighbor, friend and familiar presence in the city.

Liang began practicing pediatrics in 1987 after completing an internship at Miami Children’s Hospital. Before entering that field, she worked as a pharmacist. Her family described her professional accomplishments as the result of hard work, perseverance and a desire to contribute to the community around her.

Born in Taiwan, Liang was the sixth of seven children. She grew up with five older sisters and a younger brother in a family whose history was shaped by displacement and the effort to establish a secure future.

According to a family remembrance, her parents left their ancestral home in Canton, now called Guangzhou, for Taiwan during the upheaval surrounding the Chinese civil war. Her paternal grandmother and other relatives sought refuge in Hong Kong.

The family eventually reunited in Taiwan. Although that reunion exhausted their financial resources, being together again held lasting importance for them. Their experience of separation, sacrifice and rebuilding became an important part of the family’s story.

A maternal uncle who had lived in Washington, D.C., since 1945 later helped Liang’s mother immigrate to the United States. His assistance opened a path for the family to establish a new home.

Liang’s own career eventually brought her to the children and families she served in Coral Springs. At Coral Square Pediatrics, she devoted her professional life to children’s health, combining medical knowledge with the gentle manner her loved ones remember. Her connections in the community extended beyond her practice to the friendships she developed as a resident.

Shortly after retiring, Liang was diagnosed with mesothelioma. She underwent treatment for approximately two and a half years while maintaining residences in Florida and Los Angeles. She received care at UCLA during that time.

Her loved ones remember not only her work in medicine but also her devotion to family and the guidance she provided to those closest to her. Those personal qualities were central to the remembrance of a woman whose life included both professional service and close family relationships.

Liang is survived by her husband, Dr. Philip Shen; her child, Kevin Shen; five siblings; and nine nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur H. Liang and Kwai-San Liang, and her sister, Victoria Papanos.

A service celebrating her life was held October 17 at First Christian Church of Margate. Her passing is mourned by relatives, friends and the many patients and families she cared for during her years in Coral Springs.
