J.P. Taravella graduate Jack Sinclair makes MLB debut with perfect inning at Dodger Stadium

Coral Springs, Florida – A baseball journey that began in T-ball has now reached the biggest stage for Coral Springs native and J.P. Taravella graduate Jack Sinclair.

Sinclair made his Major League Baseball debut Friday night at Dodger Stadium, taking the mound for the Washington Nationals against the Los Angeles Dodgers. The right-hander was given the ball for the eighth inning and responded with a perfect frame, retiring all three batters he faced.

The inning also produced a milestone that Sinclair will always remember. He opened his major league career by striking out Max Muncy, recording the first strikeout of his MLB career against the two-time defending World Series champions.

Sinclair needed only 16 pitches to complete the inning. After Muncy went down on strikes, Alex Freeland grounded out to second base. Dalton Rushing then flew out to left field, giving Sinclair a 1-2-3 inning in his first appearance in the majors.

For a player who has been on a baseball field since childhood, the appearance marked the latest step in a long climb through the sport.

Sinclair graduated from J.P. Taravella High School in 2017, where he spent three seasons on the varsity baseball team. His high school career included a save in his only varsity appearance as a sophomore, followed by seven wins during his final two seasons.

He finished his high school career with a 2.36 ERA and 74 strikeouts. Sinclair was also productive at the plate, playing first base and batting .361 with one home run and 17 RBIs in 133 at-bats.

His baseball career continued at the University of Central Florida. During the shortened 2020 season, Sinclair made an impression as a reliever, going 4-0 with a 1.85 ERA before the COVID-19 pandemic brought the season to an early end.

As a senior, Sinclair moved into a larger role and made 12 starts. He finished his college career with 111 strikeouts, helping set the stage for his move into professional baseball.

The Washington Nationals selected Sinclair in the 16th round of the 2021 MLB Draft. From there, he continued working his way through the minor leagues, building the experience needed to eventually reach the majors.

Before receiving his call-up, Sinclair had appeared in 240 professional games and posted a 25-18 record with a 3.61 ERA. His performance at Triple-A Reno this season helped put him in position for his opportunity in Washington.

He went 6-2 with Reno and recorded 74 strikeouts in 60.1 innings before being promoted to the Nationals.

His first major league outing could hardly have provided a better beginning. Facing a powerful Los Angeles lineup at one of baseball’s most recognizable stadiums, Sinclair retired every batter he faced and finished the night with his first career strikeout.

For Sinclair, the moment represents years of work that started with youth baseball, continued through Little League and travel baseball, and eventually carried him through J.P. Taravella, UCF and the professional ranks.

Now he can add another line to that journey — Major League Baseball pitcher, with a perfect inning and a first career strikeout at Dodger Stadium.
