Coral Springs hosts annual Juneteenth celebration featuring music art performances and community events at the Coral Springs Center for the Arts

Coral Springs, Florida – The City of Coral Springs is preparing to bring residents together for its annual Juneteenth celebration, an evening designed to highlight culture, reflection, and community connection through a mix of entertainment and educational experiences.

The event will take place on Friday, June 19, at the Coral Springs Center for the Arts, located at 2855 Coral Springs Drive. Officials say the celebration is open to the public and aims to create a welcoming space where residents can gather and recognize the meaning behind the holiday.

The evening will begin with a complimentary Juneteenth Pre-Party starting at 5:30 p.m. Guests attending this portion of the event will be able to enjoy free small bites, live music from a DJ, and a variety of dynamic performances. In addition, attendees will receive free access to the Coral Springs Museum of Art, offering another layer of cultural engagement as part of the celebration.

City organizers have emphasized that the pre-party is designed to be accessible and community-focused, with no cost for entry. The goal is to encourage participation from residents of all ages while creating a relaxed and interactive atmosphere ahead of the main evening program.

Following the pre-party, the celebration will continue with a ticketed performance by comedian Rickey Smiley, beginning at 8 p.m. Smiley, widely known as a comedian, actor, author, television host, and award-winning radio personality, is expected to draw a large audience for the evening’s entertainment. Tickets for the comedy show must be purchased in advance through the city’s official website.

City officials say the combination of cultural programming and entertainment reflects the broader purpose of Juneteenth, which is both a historical commemoration and a modern celebration of unity and progress.

Commissioner Joshua Simmons, who made history as Coral Springs’ first Black commissioner and has been a strong advocate for Juneteenth recognition in the city, shared his perspective on the importance of the event.

“Juneteenth offers an opportunity to reflect on our nation’s history, recognize the resilience that has shaped our communities, and continue fostering understanding among one another,” said Commissioner Simmons. “Coral Springs is committed to being a welcoming community for all, and events like this help bring people together through shared experiences, education, and appreciation for the stories that continue to shape our future.”

Juneteenth, also known as “Freedom Day,” marks June 19, 1865, when enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, were informed of their freedom more than two years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. Over time, the date has evolved into a national symbol of liberation, resilience, and reflection on the ongoing pursuit of equality.

In Coral Springs, officials say the annual celebration serves not only as a cultural event but also as an opportunity for residents to engage with history in a meaningful and community-centered way. The inclusion of music, art, and performance is intended to make the experience both educational and enjoyable.

As the city prepares for the event, organizers hope the evening will bring together residents from across the community in a shared moment of celebration, reflection, and connection.
