Coral Springs man, 69, who uses cane arrested after allegedly backing car into neighbor’s walker during parking dispute

Coral Springs, Florida – A long-running dispute between two neighbors at a Coral Springs apartment building led to the arrest of a 69-year-old man after police said he backed his car into the other man’s walker during an argument over parking.

Marc A. Anderson was arrested Sept. 25 on a charge of aggravated battery on a person 65 or older, according to police and jail records. The arrest came more than two months after the July 22 confrontation.

The incident happened at an apartment building in the 7800 block of Northwest 40th Court.

According to an arrest affidavit, the neighbor called 911 at about 6:40 p.m. on July 22 and reported that Anderson had struck him with a vehicle. The two men both use mobility aids. Anderson is seen using a cane in video of the incident, while the other man relies on a walker.

The neighbor told officers that tension between the two had been building since the previous year, largely because of disagreements involving where Anderson parked his 2019 Dodge Challenger.

According to the neighbor’s account to police, building management had instructed him to take photographs of Anderson’s vehicle whenever it was parked in a way that blocked his front door.

That is what he said he was doing on July 22.

The man told investigators he was photographing the Challenger’s license plate when Anderson entered the vehicle, revved the engine and began backing up. The neighbor said he moved away to avoid the vehicle.

The situation did not end there.

According to the affidavit, Anderson then parked the Challenger in the road. The neighbor told police that Anderson said, “I hope you die.”

The man then walked into the street, where he planned to photograph the license plate again while also calling 911, according to his statement to investigators.

Police said Anderson backed up a second time.

This time, according to the neighbor, the Challenger made contact with his walker while he was holding onto it. He told investigators he jumped out of the way.

Police reviewed video recordings as part of their investigation. A detective wrote that footage from a neighbor’s doorbell camera, along with cameras at the apartment building, showed the Challenger reversing and striking the walker.

Investigators also noted that there was nothing preventing Anderson from driving the vehicle forward instead of reversing.

However, the available video did not clearly establish whether the walker was struck during the first time the Challenger backed up in the parking lot, according to the affidavit.

Anderson disputed the allegations when he spoke with officers.

He acknowledged backing up his vehicle but told police that he did not hit the other man. He also denied threatening the neighbor or intentionally attempting to strike him.

Police did not find visible damage to either the Dodge Challenger or the walker.

Coral Springs Fire Department EMS personnel also responded and examined the neighbor following the confrontation. Authorities said no injuries were found at the time.

When the man spoke with a detective again on July 30, he reported experiencing pain in his hip. However, he said he was unsure whether the pain was connected to the July 22 incident.

The investigation continued over the following weeks.

Prosecutors eventually filed a charge of aggravated battery on a person 65 or older, and an arrest warrant for Anderson was issued Sept. 17.

Coral Springs police located Anderson outside his home at about 5:13 p.m. on Sept. 25 and took him into custody. Records indicate the arrest happened without trouble.

Following his arrest, Anderson was taken to jail.

Jail records showed that he was being held without bond pending a hearing before a judge.

The arrest marked the latest development in a dispute that, according to the neighbor’s account, began with disagreements over parking and continued for roughly a year before escalating into the July confrontation.

The criminal charge against Anderson remains an allegation, and the case will proceed through the court system.
