Coral Springs Public Works earns prestigious APWA reaccreditation for third consecutive time

Coral Springs, Florida – The City of Coral Springs is celebrating another major achievement for its Department of Public Works after the department earned full reaccreditation from the American Public Works Association for the third consecutive time.

The recognition confirms that the city’s Public Works Department continues to meet nationally recognized management standards covering a wide range of services and operations. The accreditation is considered a significant mark of professionalism for public works agencies across North America.

The APWA accreditation process examines how an agency operates from top to bottom. The review includes leadership and administration, engineering, fleet management, stormwater systems, water and wastewater infrastructure, solid waste services and emergency preparedness.

For Coral Springs, maintaining the accreditation for another cycle means the department has continued to meet the organization’s established management practices and demonstrate its commitment to improving the way it serves the community.

That structure is designed to encourage public works agencies to keep reviewing and improving their policies and procedures rather than simply meeting standards once and moving on.

The program provides an independent evaluation of an agency’s policies, procedures and performance. It also emphasizes operational excellence, accountability and continuous improvement.

Coral Springs first achieved APWA accreditation in 2017. The department has since maintained the distinction through subsequent reaccreditation cycles, making the latest recognition the third consecutive time it has successfully completed the process.

City officials said the continued accreditation places Coral Springs among a select group of public works agencies in Florida that have achieved the recognition.

The department’s responsibilities cover many of the services residents depend on every day, even when those services receive little attention until something goes wrong. The APWA program is available to public works agencies throughout North America. Agencies seeking accreditation must demonstrate that their management practices meet the standards outlined in APWA’s Public Works Management Practices Manual.

Maintaining that status requires continued work after the initial accreditation is awarded. Departments must keep records, report on their progress and prepare for future reviews as part of the four-year accreditation cycle.
