Eagle Scout Nate Rojas builds new donation box for Sawgrass Nature Center

Coral Springs, Florida – A new donation box outside the Sawgrass Nature Center is giving visitors a convenient place to support the local facility, while also marking the completion of an Eagle Scout service project.

The box was designed and built by Nate Rojas as part of his Eagle Scout project. It now stands in front of the Nature Center’s main building, providing a useful addition to the campus and saving the organization from having to purchase a replacement.

“If he had not built this box for us, we would have to buy a new one, so this benefits us,” said Robin Reccasina, Executive Director.

For the Nature Center, the project is another example of how local Eagle Scout candidates have contributed practical improvements to the property over the years. Reccasina said the organization has benefited from several projects completed by Scouts working toward the prestigious rank.

Those efforts have included the construction of animal enclosures used on the campus. Eagle Scout candidates have also built other useful features, including a storage shed and benches.

The projects can serve a practical purpose while also giving young Scouts an opportunity to take responsibility for planning and completing a significant community service effort.

“We appreciate the work the Eagle Scouts have done for us,” she said.

Rojas’ donation box joins those earlier projects as another permanent feature at the Nature Center. Positioned near the main building, it can be used by visitors who want to contribute to the organization while visiting the facility.

The Eagle Scout rank is the highest achievement available in Scouting America, the organization formerly known as the Boy Scouts of America. Reaching the rank requires more than simply completing a list of activities. Scouts must demonstrate leadership and complete at least 21 merit badges as part of the process.

A major service project is another central requirement.

According to Scouting America, an Eagle Scout candidate must develop and lead a substantial service project that benefits a school or community organization outside of Scouting. The candidate is responsible for organizing the effort and leading others through the work.

For a project such as the donation box, that means taking an idea from planning through construction and ultimately delivering something that can continue serving the community.

At the Sawgrass Nature Center, the finished project will remain in use after the Eagle Scout requirement has been completed. The donation box provides an ongoing benefit to the organization while adding to a growing collection of improvements made by Scouts over the years.

For Rojas, the project represents both a leadership achievement and a contribution to a local organization. For the Nature Center, it is one more useful piece of infrastructure made possible through community involvement.

Reccasina said the organization values the work contributed by Eagle Scouts, whose projects have helped improve different parts of the campus.

As the new donation box begins its service outside the Nature Center, it continues that tradition while giving visitors another way to support the facility and its work.
