Broward Commissioner Udine highlights back-to-school safety, expanded FLL flights, and Dine Out Lauderdale events during busy August
Coral Springs, Florida – As August begins, Broward County residents are preparing for a busy month filled with new school routines, travel opportunities, community activities, and local dining experiences. Broward County Commissioner Michael Udine is highlighting several important updates for families and residents, including back-to-school safety reminders, new flight options at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, and the return of Dine Out Lauderdale Restaurant Months.
With students across Broward County returning to classrooms on August 10, officials are reminding families that safety should be a priority as children travel to and from school. Many students will walk, ride bicycles, or use other forms of transportation, making awareness and preparation especially important.
Commissioner Udine encouraged parents and students to review basic safety habits before the school year begins. Children walking or biking to school should remember to look both ways before crossing streets, stay alert, and avoid distractions while traveling.
For students riding bicycles, wearing a properly fitted helmet remains one of the most important safety steps. Officials also remind families that children should pay attention to their surroundings and avoid using devices or engaging in activities that could take their focus away from traffic and pedestrians.
The county is also encouraging families to take advantage of the Florida Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday, which runs through August 20. The annual program allows shoppers to save money on eligible school supplies and other necessities as families prepare for the upcoming academic year.
Additional bicycle and pedestrian safety information is available through the Broward County Bicycling and Pedestrian Advisory Committee, which provides resources designed to help students and families travel more safely throughout the community.
Along with academics, the fall sports season is getting underway across Broward County. Commissioner Udine noted that athletics provide students with opportunities to build friendships, develop teamwork skills, and become more connected to their schools.
Broward Parks will once again serve as locations for some youth sports activities, giving children across the county opportunities to participate in organized athletics. Officials are reminding players, parents, coaches, and spectators that sports should remain a positive environment focused on safety, respect, and good sportsmanship.
As student athletes prepare for competition, community members are encouraged to support local teams and help create a successful and enjoyable season for athletes throughout District 3 and the entire county.

Beyond schools and sports, Broward County continues to expand opportunities for travelers through Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL). Airport officials and local leaders are working to increase flight options following changes in the airline industry, including the impact of Spirit Airlines’ departure from some routes.
Commissioner Udine said Broward County and its airline partners have been working to restore and expand service to destinations previously available to travelers. In July, he joined airport officials and airline representatives for a ribbon-cutting event celebrating JetBlue’s announcement of increased service from FLL.
The expanded JetBlue schedule includes additional domestic and international destinations, as well as more frequent daily flights across the airline’s network. County leaders say the continued growth of FLL is important for residents, visitors, and the local economy.
“Dine Out Lauderdale” is also returning this fall, giving residents another reason to explore restaurants throughout Broward County. The annual restaurant promotion runs from August 1 through September 30 and features special lunch and dinner menus at participating restaurants.
During the event, diners can enjoy preset-price meals while discovering new restaurants or returning to longtime favorites. Officials say the program is also an opportunity to support local businesses and the hospitality industry.
