Tamarac synagogue invites residents to annual Mitzvah Day of service
Coral Springs, Florida – Temple Beth Torah Sha’aray Tzedek in Tamarac is inviting residents of all backgrounds and faiths to take part in its annual Mitzvah Day and Open House, an event designed to bring people together through volunteer service, kindness and community connection.
The event will take place on Sunday, Aug. 16, from 9:30 a.m. to noon at the synagogue located at 5700 NW 94th Ave. Visitors should enter through the rear parking lot entrance off Northwest 58th Street near the Tamarac Aquatic Center.
Organizers said the morning will provide an opportunity for community members to participate in hands-on service projects while also learning more about the synagogue’s programs, values and mission. The event will bring together synagogue members, local residents, clergy, educators and community leaders for a shared effort to support several nonprofit organizations throughout Broward County.
Mitzvah Day is based around several important Jewish principles, including mitzvah, which refers to good deeds or commandments, tzedakah, the practice of charity and social responsibility, and Tikkun Olam, the idea of helping repair the world through acts of kindness and service.

During the event, volunteers will participate in a variety of projects aimed at helping children, families, veterans and people facing difficult circumstances. One activity will involve preparing hundreds of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for Craig’s Pantry in Plantation, providing food support for individuals and families in need.
Other projects will focus on collecting essential items and creating meaningful gifts for local organizations. Volunteers will gather clothing donations for veterans’ homes and Women in Distress of Broward County, an organization that supports victims of domestic violence.
Participants will also assemble craft kits for JAFCO’s Children’s Ability Center, create baby bibs and collect infant clothing for Kids in Distress and the Florida Guardian ad Litem program, and make blankets for children receiving care at Broward Health Children’s Hospital in Coral Springs.
Organizers said the event is meant to show how small acts of service can have a significant impact when people work together.
In addition to the volunteer activities, synagogue clergy, educators and leadership members will be available throughout the morning to answer questions about membership, religious education opportunities and the congregation’s programs.
A OneBlood Big Red Bus will also be stationed at the synagogue from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., giving attendees another way to contribute to the community by donating blood.
Along with the service event, Temple Beth Torah Sha’aray Tzedek will introduce a special Welcome Home Membership promotion. New members who join between Aug. 16 and Sept. 1 and complete payment during that promotional period will receive complimentary High Holiday seats and Break Fast meals for everyone included in their membership household, including children.

Leaders said the offer is designed to welcome individuals and families who may be searching for a Jewish spiritual community or educational opportunities for their children.
Temple Beth Torah Sha’aray Tzedek is an egalitarian Conservative synagogue serving West Broward County. The congregation includes people from many different backgrounds, including interfaith families, LGBTQ members, families with children and individuals of all ages.
