Jealousy over a relationship may have led to Coral Springs shooting involving father and son inside a Jeep

Coral Springs, Florida – A Coral Springs man is facing multiple serious charges after police say he opened fire on a Jeep carrying a father and son in an incident that investigators believe may have been fueled by jealousy involving a relationship with a woman.

The shooting happened Wednesday afternoon near Northwest 87th Terrace and Atlantic Boulevard in Coral Springs, where police responded to reports of gunfire in the Governor’s Walk neighborhood. Authorities said the confrontation quickly escalated into a violent encounter that left one person injured and a community searching for answers.

According to an arrest report, the father and his son had driven to the woman’s residence after returning from Miami because they were concerned about her well-being. As they entered the neighborhood, the father told investigators he noticed Christopher Smith, 57, standing near the roadway next to a black Ram pickup truck.

The driver said he stopped the Jeep to park when Smith stepped into the roadway and claimed his foot was trapped underneath one of the vehicle’s tires. The father immediately attempted to reverse the Jeep to move the vehicle away from Smith’s foot, according to police documents.

Investigators said that instead of moving away from the vehicle, Smith allegedly pulled a handgun from his waistband, pointed it toward the occupied Jeep, and began firing.

The driver told police he believed Smith was attempting to kill him. After the shots were fired, the man exited the Jeep and ran away in a zigzag pattern while Smith continued shooting in his direction, according to the arrest report.

The victim’s son, who was sitting in the front passenger seat, also got out of the Jeep and ran toward his father. Police said the son called 911 after hearing additional gunshots.

Coral Springs Police officers responded to the area around 3:14 p.m. Wednesday after receiving several emergency calls reporting gunfire. When officers arrived, they located Smith inside a vehicle that was stopped in the roadway and detained him without incident.

Police said they recovered a gray Glock 9mm handgun that was concealed in the front waistband of Smith’s pants.

The father and son were transported to Broward Health Coral Springs following the shooting. One of the victims suffered a gunshot wound to the left shoulder, according to police.

Investigators later learned more about a possible motive behind the confrontation. A woman interviewed by detectives told police that Smith had become increasingly jealous of her relationship with the victim and had demanded that she choose between the two men. She refused.

The woman also told investigators that Smith wanted her to move with him to California, but she declined the request.
According to the arrest report, shortly before officers arrived at the scene, the woman saw Smith remove a handgun from the glove compartment of his pickup truck and leave the vehicle while armed.

Evidence collected at the scene supported investigators’ account of the shooting. Crime scene investigators documented multiple spent shell casings, bullet impacts, and damage caused by gunfire to the Jeep. Police also found a bullet strike on the driver’s seat, where one of the victims had been sitting before escaping the vehicle.

Investigators also reviewed surveillance footage and spoke with nearby residents. Police said the evidence showed Smith armed himself before the confrontation, moved into the path of the Jeep, and fired additional rounds after the driver had already run away.

The arrest affidavit states that Smith later entered the Jeep while still armed. Police said firing into a vehicle occupied by a child created a significant risk of death or serious injury, leading to an additional child abuse charge.

Smith was arrested and booked into the Broward Sheriff’s Office main jail. He faces charges including attempted first-degree murder with a firearm, armed burglary of a conveyance, shooting into an occupied vehicle, and child abuse.

The investigation remains active as authorities continue reviewing evidence and working to establish the full sequence of events that led to the shooting. The case highlights the dangers of personal disputes escalating into violent confrontations, according to investigators, who continue to examine all circumstances surrounding the incident.
