Coral Springs Charter grad Stephanie Basso returns to Division I softball after standout junior college season earns FGCU opportunity
Coral Springs, Florida – A familiar name in Coral Springs softball is making her way back to the Division I level. Coral Springs Charter graduate Stephanie Basso has signed with Florida Gulf Coast University, marking a return to top-tier collegiate softball after a dominant sophomore season at Florida Southwestern State College.
For Basso, the move is both a reward and a reset, built on years of steady development and one breakout season that changed her trajectory. She said the decision came down to more than statistics or opportunity. It was about comfort, trust, and fit within a program.
“The biggest thing that went into my decision was the relationship I have with the coaches, Basso said. “Building that trust with them was really important to me. I wanted to be at a place where I felt supported on and off the field.”
That sense of support will now carry her to FGCU, where she will continue her college career after a journey that already includes stops at Coastal Carolina University and Florida Southwestern State College.
Basso, a 2024 graduate of Coral Springs Charter, first stepped into Division I softball at Coastal Carolina. As a freshman, she appeared in 10 games and recorded her first collegiate hit and RBI against the University of North Carolina, a small but meaningful early milestone in her career.
She later transferred to Florida Southwestern State College, where her game took a major leap forward. In her sophomore season, Basso became one of the most productive players in junior college softball nationwide. She finished the year hitting .391 with 13 home runs, 59 RBIs, and 38 runs scored, along with five stolen bases.
Her performance helped lead the Buccaneers to an impressive 57-7 record and a run to the NJCAA World Series Semifinals, placing her among the standout performers at the junior college level. The season also helped re-establish her as a strong Division I prospect.
Basso’s success did not come overnight. She has been around the game since she was 5 years old, developing through travel ball programs such as Boca Impact and Rock Gold Manetta. Those early years helped shape her fundamentals and competitive edge.
At Coral Springs Charter, she spent five years on the varsity roster, playing a key role in one of the program’s most successful stretches. The Panthers won a district championship each season during her tenure and captured four BCAA championships overall.
By the time she graduated, Basso had built an impressive high school resume, batting over .309 with 15 home runs and 70 RBIs. She also earned the team’s Most Valuable Player honor as a senior and helped guide the Panthers to 75 wins across her varsity career.
Her high school coach, Mark Montimurro, believes her game is built for the next level and beyond.
“Stephanie is a fantastic catcher, has a cannon for an arm, and has immense power, which she showed this past season at FSW,” Head Coach Mark Montimurro said. “She has the ability to thrive at the Division I level.”
Now at FGCU, Basso will not only return to Division I softball but also reunite with former Coral Springs Charter teammate Heather Robertson. The Eagles are a program with competitive history, having won 21 games last season and making three NCAA Tournament appearances in their history.
For Basso, the path has been anything but linear, but each step has added to her growth as a player. From Coral Springs to Coastal Carolina, through a breakout junior college season, and now back to Division I, her journey reflects persistence and steady improvement.
As she prepares for her next chapter with FGCU, expectations continue to rise, but so does her confidence.
