Derek Godfrey continues family tradition with college baseball commitment marking the next step in his athletic journey
Coral Springs, Florida – Another chapter is being written in the Godfrey family’s athletic story, as Derek Godfrey has officially committed to play college baseball at Garrett College, continuing a strong tradition of success that already includes his older sister Brianna Godfrey, who made her mark in softball.
For Derek, the moment represents years of steady work rather than a sudden breakthrough. Baseball has been part of his life since he was just five years old, and his path has taken him through multiple travel programs, including Margate Legacy, Barwis, and the X Team. Each stop added another layer to his development, shaping him into a versatile player capable of contributing on both sides of the game.
His journey also included key steps at the school level. Godfrey played middle school baseball at Coral Springs Charter before transferring to West Boca Raton Community High School during his sophomore year. There, he joined head coach Charlie Fine’s program, where his game began to take a more defined shape.
Over three varsity seasons, Godfrey steadily built a reputation as a dependable two-way player. His senior year stood out in particular. On the mound, he delivered sharp results with a 0.89 ERA, allowing just one earned run over 8.1 innings pitched. At the plate, he contributed a .251 batting average, along with one home run and 17 RBIs. He closed out his high school career with a total of 26 RBIs.
Beyond individual numbers, Godfrey was also part of a competitive team run at West Boca. The Bulls captured a district championship with a win over Coral Springs High School, then followed it up with a regional playoff victory against Braddock. Their postseason journey eventually ended in the regional semifinals in a decisive game three loss to eventual state champion St. Thomas Aquinas.
Even in defeat, the experience gave Godfrey a clearer sense of the level required to compete at higher stages, something he now carries into his college future.
Looking ahead, he is focused on growth before stepping into his next program. Strength, speed, and consistency are at the top of his priorities as he prepares to join a Garrett College team that posted a 33-18 record last season.
For Godfrey, the commitment is more than just the next step in his athletic career. It is also a continuation of a family legacy built on discipline, patience, and performance under pressure. With his sister already having set a strong example in softball, Derek now moves forward with his own path in baseball, carrying both personal ambition and family pride into the next stage of his journey.
