Coral Springs Police unveil new hurricane-proof K9 facility

Coral Springs, Florida – The Coral Springs Police Department has officially unveiled a new hurricane-resistant K9 facility designed to improve safety, training, and shelter conditions for its four-legged officers and their handlers.

City and police leaders gathered on June 17 for a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the new building, located at 4181 NW 121st Avenue. The facility marks a significant upgrade for the department’s K9 operations, especially during severe weather events that often threaten South Florida.

The new structure is built with emergency conditions in mind, offering protection during hurricanes and other disasters while also serving as a daily operational hub for training and care. Officials say the goal is to ensure the K9 unit has a stable and secure environment no matter the circumstances outside.

“This is a project that provides our 5 K9s and handlers with a dedicated, safe, and secure space for daily operations, training, and shelter during hurricanes and other emergencies,” said Ryan Himmel, spokesperson for Coral Springs.

Inside the facility, the department now has seven air-conditioned kennels positioned next to the training area. The layout is designed to make daily routines smoother while also giving the dogs a comfortable and controlled environment when they are off duty or in training.

City officials noted that the investment was made possible through federal funding, specifically the American Rescue Plan Act. The funding allowed the city to prioritize public safety infrastructure without placing additional strain on local resources.

“This project was funded through the American Rescue Plan Act. This building ensures we are taking care of our K9 partners who work alongside our officers every day to help keep Coral Springs safe,” said Himmel.

The importance of the facility was also highlighted by city leadership during the ribbon-cutting event. Commissioner Joe McHugh expressed support for the project and emphasized its long-term value for both the department and the community.

“This hurricane-proof building will benefit our K9 officers,” he said.

The new K9 facility represents a broader effort by the city to modernize police infrastructure and ensure that every part of the department, including its animal partners, is properly equipped for both routine duties and emergency situations.

For Coral Springs Police, the upgrade is more than just a new building. It is a dedicated space that recognizes the role K9 units play in daily policing, from assisting in searches to supporting officers in the field.

With hurricane season a constant concern in Florida, officials say the timing of the project is especially important. The facility now gives the department added peace of mind, knowing its K9 partners have a secure place to stay and train when storms approach.
