Coral Springs City Commission to decide on extra $135,000 funding for Sportsplex Revitalization Plan and Development

Coral Springs, Florida – At the upcoming city commission meeting, city officials are set to vote on a proposal to allocate an additional $135,000 to the firm tasked with developing plans for the redevelopment of the Coral Springs Aquatic Complex and Tennis Center. This would increase the total amount awarded to Sports Facilities Development LLC, the Clearwater-based company hired last year, to $290,500.

The initial contract of $150,500 was awarded to Sports Facilities Development in June 2024, marking the first step in what officials are calling the “sportsplex optimization project.” This initiative aims to transform a section of vacant land located behind the existing aquatic facility, creating a state-of-the-art sports and fitness complex. The project envisions a new gym with basketball courts, a track, bleachers, a fitness center, and locker rooms—essentially a hub for athletic activities in the community.

Beyond the new gym facility, the company was also hired to reimagine the existing aquatic and tennis facilities to better serve the community’s needs. The goal is to enhance functionality, aesthetics, and overall user experience. Additionally, the Tom Messenheimer Field, which is currently an open space used for special events, will be integrated into the redesign for improved usage.

The additional $135,000 under consideration would fund phase two of the project. This phase involves conducting planning sessions, creating conceptual pre-design and design services, and assisting in the selection of an architectural and engineering firm to bring the vision to life. Sports Facilities Development will also continue to collaborate with the architects, engineers, and construction teams throughout the design and construction stages, ensuring that the project moves forward smoothly.

The conceptual rendering developed by Sports Facilities Development provides a glimpse into what the completed facility could look like. The new indoor sports complex would feature eight basketball courts, making it a versatile space for both recreational and competitive events. This complex is slated to be built on vacant land located along Royal Palm Boulevard, just across from the current aquatic facility at 12441 Royal Palm Boulevard. The rendering also includes plans for a new outdoor aquatic leisure area, which would be situated on the special events field near the existing complex. While these designs are still in the conceptual phase, they offer a promising vision for what could become a vibrant athletic and community center.

City officials have emphasized that this conceptual plan is still in its early stages, and details may change as the project progresses. However, the proposed additions to the sportsplex are expected to play a significant role in enhancing the recreational options available to Coral Springs residents.

The upcoming vote on the additional funding is a critical step toward realizing the city’s vision for this expansive development. The city commission will meet on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. in the Coral Springs City Hall Commission Chambers at 9500 W. Sample Road, where members will discuss and vote on the proposal.

If approved, the new funding will help move the project closer to its next stages, potentially bringing a modernized sportsplex to Coral Springs in the near future. The city’s leaders are hopeful that the completed project will not only enhance the community’s athletic resources but also provide a hub for residents to gather, exercise, and enjoy a wide range of activities.

As Coral Springs continues to grow, investments in community infrastructure like the sportsplex overhaul are seen as key to maintaining a high quality of life for residents. The project is expected to contribute to the city’s overall development, providing new opportunities for physical fitness and community engagement.
