Driver and passengers in Coral Springs file a more than $100,000 lawsuit against Coconut Creek for police-involved vehicle accident

Coral Springs, Florida – After a minor traffic mishap involving a Coconut Creek police vehicle, a Coral Springs resident and his companions have sued the city of Coconut Creek, requesting more than $100,000 in damages.
Around 5:40 p.m. on January 22, 2024, a collision happened in Coral Springs close to the intersection of Coral Springs Drive and West Atlantic Boulevard.
Police and court documents examined by TAPinto Coral Springs show that Officer Jefferson Rodriguez’s Coconut Creek police SUV collided with the back of a stopped Hyundai Elantra.
Three female passengers were in the Elantra, which was driven by 19-year-old Coral Springs resident Eduar Fuenmayor.
According to a Coral Springs police crash report, the car’s back bumper sustained damage worth about $1,000.
At the time of the mishap, there were no reported injuries.
According to Rodriguez’s report, there was no obvious damage to the Elantra, and Fuenmayor did not want to call the police to report the collision.
According to his police report, Rodriguez persisted, telling Fuenmayor that it was Coconut Creek city policy to record accidents. He also asked him to stay and assist with the investigation.
Police from Coral Springs arrived at the scene of the collision.
Fuenmayor said to the police that Rodriguez’s SUV struck his Elantra from behind while he was stopped at the red light.
Rodriguez, on the other hand, informed Coral Springs police that other vehicles had begun to move and that the signal was green. According to the crash report, he struck the Elantra as he proceeded forward.
According to the crash report, Fuenmayor did not do anything that caused the collision.
Furthermore, Rodriguez was accused of driving his car in a “careless or negligent manner.”
It’s unclear if Rodriguez received a ticket from Coral Springs police.
On January 30, 2024, eight days after the collision, a lawyer for the four Elantra passengers wrote to Coconut Creek officials to inform them that they intended to file a lawsuit.
Fuenmayor and his three passengers filed a lawsuit against Rodriguez in Broward County Circuit Court on January 22, 2025, the one-year anniversary of the accident. They claim Rodriguez drove the police SUV carelessly, causing them to suffer injuries, pain and suffering, mental distress, and medical costs.
According to the court documents, they are requesting damages over $100,000.
