Suspect in the February murder of an 18-year-old in Broward County arrested
Lauderdale Lakes, Florida – The Broward Sheriff’s Office has apprehended 23-year-old Jamariel Johnson, the suspect behind the fatal shooting of 18-year-old Decarlo Horton in February. The arrest, which took place on August 7, has brought some closure to a case that has lingered in the Lauderdale Lakes community for months.
On the evening of February 25, just before 9 p.m., Broward County Regional Communications was alerted to a shooting incident on North Pacific Breeze Circle. Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies, along with Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue, arrived swiftly at the scene. They found Horton with multiple gunshot wounds. Despite immediate life-saving efforts, Horton was rushed to Broward Health Medical Center, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
The incident initially baffled investigators, but persistent efforts by the BSO’s Homicide and Crime Scene units gradually pieced together the events leading to Horton’s tragic death. The investigation pointed to an exchange gone wrong, orchestrated through OfferUp—a popular app for buying and selling goods. Horton and Johnson reportedly met for the sale of a watch, which tragically escalated into violence.
Johnson now faces charges of first-degree murder with a firearm and is currently held at the Broward County Main Jail. The case highlights the risks associated with private sales arranged through digital platforms and the importance of taking precautions during such transactions.
The Broward Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the case and has urged anyone with additional information to come forward. Detective Steve Novak of the BSO Homicide Unit is leading the inquiry, and tips can be submitted through the SaferWatch app or anonymously via Broward Crime Stoppers. This case serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers lurking in seemingly routine interactions and the profound impact of crime on communities and families.
