Coral Springs moves forward with search for design and engineering firm for massive Sportplex project with potential $100 million development plan

Coral Springs, Florida – City leaders in Coral Springs have taken an important early step toward one of the largest recreation projects in the city’s history, launching the search for a design and engineering firm to help shape the future Coral Springs Sportplex. The planned development carries an estimated price tag of up to $100 million and is expected to significantly expand the city’s sports and recreation footprint.

On March 26, the city officially issued a request for letters of interest from qualified and experienced firms, according to city documents. The move signals the beginning of a planning phase that will eventually lead to full construction bids for what officials describe as a major, multi-purpose athletic and community facility.

The proposed Sportplex will be located at Sportplex Drive and Royal Palm Boulevard, in an area already home to the Coral Springs Aquatics Complex. City documents confirm that the existing aquatic facilities will remain in place, including the competition pool, diving well, and lap pool. However, surrounding infrastructure may see major upgrades or complete replacement, including buildings, furnishings, fixtures, and equipment.

At the center of the vision is a major expansion of indoor athletic space. Plans include the construction of a 12-court basketball gymnasium, a facility that would allow the city to host large tournaments and regional competitions. Alongside this, the project also calls for renovations to the current aquatics complex buildings to better support increased use and modern standards.

Beyond sports facilities alone, the Sportplex is designed to function as a full-scale community destination. According to city documents, the development is expected to include food and beverage areas, flexible meeting and congregation spaces, training and fitness rooms, locker rooms, administrative offices, and a dedicated family entertainment zone. The idea is to create a space that serves both competitive athletics and everyday community activity.

City officials say the broader goal is to position Coral Springs as a stronger destination for major national tournaments while also improving recreational access for residents. By combining multiple types of facilities in one complex, planners hope to attract visitors, support local athletes, and expand economic activity tied to sports tourism.

At this stage, the city is focused on selecting the right partner to bring the vision to life. The chosen firm will be responsible for developing the conceptual design, engineering work, and construction documents needed to move the project forward. Once those materials are complete, the city will be able to request bids from general contractors for actual construction.

There is currently no set timeline for completion, and officials have not yet confirmed how much the design phase itself will cost. The project remains in its early planning stage, with much depending on the outcome of the selection process.

Firms interested in the project must submit letters outlining their qualifications, experience, and overall interest by April 29. After the deadline, a city review committee will evaluate all submissions and narrow the field to at least three firms. Those finalists will then be invited to participate in interviews and presentations before a final decision is made.

The selected firm and proposed contract will ultimately be brought before the city commission for approval. City documents indicate that only after this step will the Sportplex design process officially move into its next stage.

For now, the project represents a long-term investment in Coral Springs’ recreational infrastructure. While still in its early phases, the Sportplex plan signals a major commitment to expanding athletic facilities and creating a space capable of hosting large-scale events while serving the daily needs of the community.
