Coral Springs woman arrested after allegedly biting her mother and brother and using pepper spray during family dispute
Coral Springs, Florida – A domestic dispute turned violent last week when a 20-year-old woman allegedly attacked her mother and brother in their Coral Springs home. Joy Rene is accused of biting her mother and brother multiple times and spraying her mother in the face with pepper spray during the altercation, authorities said.
The incident occurred on March 19 at a residence in Coral Springs after an argument over a vehicle purchased by the mother for her children. According to the arrest report, Rene had been using the car and leaving for extended periods without permission. The mother attempted to retrieve the keys, which sparked a physical confrontation.
Police said that during the struggle, Rene bit her mother three times, striking the back, shoulder, and wrist, leaving visible injuries. Her brother tried to intervene and was also bitten twice on his arm and wrist. When officers arrived, they found the mother using milk to relieve the effects of the pepper spray, while Rene appeared visibly upset.
Authorities noted that Rene sprayed her mother in the face before police arrived. Witnesses confirmed seeing Rene bite both victims and use the pepper spray. When questioned, Rene admitted to both actions, claiming she was trying to leave after being held down.
Emergency responders evaluated both victims at the scene, though they declined further medical treatment. Police documented the injuries and arrested Rene on two counts of domestic battery. She was taken to Broward Health Coral Springs for medical clearance before being transported to the Broward County Main Jail.
Rene has since been released on bond but is under a no-contact order with the victims as the case moves forward. The Coral Springs Police Department continues to investigate the incident, which underscores the dangers of domestic disputes escalating into violence.
Family members and neighbors said the situation was shocking, given the normally calm nature of the household. Authorities encourage anyone experiencing or witnessing domestic violence to report incidents immediately to prevent harm and protect vulnerable individuals.
The case also highlights ongoing concerns about family conflicts over shared property and boundaries, particularly when emotions run high and disputes escalate physically. Coral Springs officials said that law enforcement and social services remain committed to intervening in domestic violence situations to safeguard community safety.
As the investigation continues, Rene faces criminal charges and legal proceedings related to the alleged domestic battery and use of pepper spray against her mother. The victims are reportedly recovering at home and are cooperating with authorities to ensure that the matter is resolved through the legal system.
