Coral Springs commission to review major upgrades for Lions Park and J P Taravella High School athletic field with Broward School District

Coral Springs, Florida – The Coral Springs City Commission is set to review plans for significant upgrades to local recreational and athletic facilities in partnership with Broward County Public Schools during a Wednesday workshop. The meeting will focus on improvements at Lions Park, adjacent to Hunt Elementary School, and the athletic field at J.P. Taravella High School, signaling a major investment in both community and school-based amenities.

Lions Park has been under a long-standing arrangement between the city and the school district, with the city handling its maintenance. According to city documents, the proposed upgrades call for a reconfiguration of the current layout, including the removal of existing dugouts, a baseball field, playground, and basketball courts. Plans show the installation of a multi-use athletic turf field designed to accommodate a range of sports, while a new playground would be relocated further from the field to enhance safety and usability for children.

Funding for Lions Park improvements will come from multiple sources. Hunt Elementary will contribute $250,000 for the playground, while an additional $254,000 will be provided through federal Community Development Block Grant money. Officials emphasized that both the playground and field reconfiguration aim to provide more versatile and modern facilities for students and residents alike.

Meanwhile, the J.P. Taravella High School athletic field project includes plans for new AstroTurf, upgraded bleachers for both home and away teams, a press box, and a new scoreboard. City documents also mention the possibility of installing a pathway and lighting for the field, with preliminary estimates placing that portion of the project at $1 million. Funding for the city’s contribution to the project has not yet been determined, pending further discussion and final agreements.

Both projects will require formal agreements between the school board and the city commission once plans are finalized. Officials note that these upgrades are part of ongoing efforts to improve recreational infrastructure, enhance safety, and provide high-quality athletic facilities for students and the wider Coral Springs community.

The proposed improvements reflect a broader collaboration between the city and Broward County Public Schools to maximize shared spaces and resources. By combining school and municipal investments, the projects aim to create multi-purpose facilities that benefit both students during the school day and community members during evenings and weekends.

The workshop will provide commissioners with a detailed overview of project plans, costs, and timelines. Public input may also be considered, giving residents an opportunity to weigh in on the upgrades that could shape the future of recreational and athletic opportunities in Coral Springs.

With both Lions Park and the J.P. Taravella High School field receiving much-needed attention, city officials hope these improvements will enhance outdoor spaces, encourage physical activity, and create safer, more accessible facilities for years to come.
