Broward Health Coral Springs expands cardiac services with first successful left-sided ablation procedure for patients with atrial fibrillation

Coral Springs, Florida – Broward Health Coral Springs has taken a major step forward in cardiac care by expanding its heart services and successfully completing the hospital’s first left-sided ablation to treat atrial fibrillation, a common heart rhythm disorder that affects millions of Americans.

The hospital announced the milestone in a press release, highlighting that it now offers advanced electrophysiology treatments for patients with complex heart conditions. The addition of these services allows physicians to provide minimally invasive options that can help restore normal heart rhythms and reduce the risk of stroke.

Cardiac ablation, the procedure performed at the hospital, uses energy to create tiny scars in the heart tissue. These scars block abnormal electrical signals that cause atrial fibrillation, often referred to as AFib, and allow the heart to maintain a regular rhythm. Doctors say the procedure can be life-changing for patients who experience symptoms such as palpitations, fatigue, or shortness of breath.

“Completing our first left-sided ablation is a significant achievement for Broward Health Coral Springs and a major benefit to our patients,” the hospital said in the press release. “We are proud to expand our cardiac services and provide leading-edge treatment options for the community.”

Atrial fibrillation is the most common heart arrhythmia in the United States and a leading contributor to stroke. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, an estimated 12.1 million people in the U.S. will have AFib by 2030. In 2021 alone, AFib was noted on 232,030 death certificates and was listed as the underlying cause of death in 28,037 cases.

Broward Health Coral Springs’ expansion of cardiac care demonstrates a growing focus on heart health and preventative treatment in South Florida. The hospital’s electrophysiology team continues to advance care with cutting-edge procedures, aiming to improve patient outcomes and reduce complications associated with AFib.
