Handyman in Coral Springs arrested after allegedly stealing over $60,000 in jewelry and cutting Wi-Fi to disable security cameras

Coral Springs, Florida – A handyman has been arrested after allegedly stealing more than $60,000 worth of jewelry from a Coral Springs woman, using her own Wi-Fi to disable security cameras during the heist. Scott Barron, 45, is accused of exploiting his access to the woman’s home while doing odd jobs for her over a period of six months.

The crime was discovered on June 18, when the victim returned home from a doctor’s appointment to find her Wi-Fi was down, and her high-end jewelry was missing. According to the police report, the woman was shocked to discover that her once-secure home had been compromised. It was not until later that investigators would uncover the shocking details of how Barron allegedly disabled the security cameras by disconnecting the internet.

Detectives later revealed that Barron, who had been working in the woman’s house for several months, had been given access to her Wi-Fi system. He reportedly knew the passwords to her network and had even installed the system himself. This knowledge of the home’s security infrastructure enabled him to disable the cameras, making it easier for him to steal the valuable jewelry without being detected.

When Barron was arrested in June on unrelated charges, investigators found three of the missing bracelets in his possession at the Broward County Jail. Further investigation led to the recovery of more stolen jewelry, which was found in his truck and later turned over by Barron’s father. These items were confirmed to be the missing jewelry belonging to the victim.

Barron’s story became even more suspicious during the investigation, as he gave conflicting statements about the stolen items. At one point, he claimed he had bought the jewelry at Home Depot, a story that authorities quickly debunked. His inconsistent statements raised further red flags about his involvement in the crime.

As a result of the theft, Barron now faces two counts of grand theft, one of which involves property valued over $20,000. Authorities are continuing their investigation to determine if there are additional victims or stolen items linked to Barron.

The case highlights the risks homeowners face when granting access to contractors and service workers. Barron’s ability to use his knowledge of the home’s Wi-Fi system to disable security cameras emphasizes the importance of securing personal information and home systems, even when working with trusted individuals.

For now, Barron remains behind bars, awaiting further proceedings in his case. His arrest serves as a reminder of how quickly trust can be abused, leading to significant financial loss and emotional distress for victims.
